UPDATE – Turkey's benchmark stock index down at close

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index ended the first business day of the year down 2.64 percent to close at 88,865.01 points on Wednesday.

Starting the day at 90,986.13 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index fell 2,405.47 points from Monday's close.

The markets were closed on Tuesday due to the New Year's Day official holiday.

During Wednesday's trading, the benchmark index bottomed out at 88,650.37 points while the highest level was seen at opening.

Total market value of the BIST 100 was around 574 billion Turkish liras ($108.7 billion) as of daily close — recording a daily trade volume of 3.98 billion lira ($745.6 million).

Top listed companies were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($6.81 billion), private lender Garanti ($6.14 billion), and energy company Tupras ($5.43 billion) by market value.

Highest trade volumes were posted by national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, Garanti Bankasi, and state-run lender Halkbank.

On Wednesday, 11 stocks on the BIST 100 rose, 84 declined, and five were flat compared with the previous close.

Shares of casting producer Cemas Dokum were the top gainers — up 6.58 percent — as stocks of Verusa Holding fell the most with a 4.22-percent drop.

The USD/TRY exchange rate was 5.3830 at daily close, while one U.S. dollar traded for 5.2920 Turkish liras before the holiday break.

The euro/lira rate stood at 6.1220, up from 6.0550 at the previous close.

One British pound traded for 6.7990 Turkish liras, compared with Monday's close of 6.7810.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, the price of one ounce of gold was around $1,288.40 by market close, versus $1,280.00 at the previous close.

Hovering between $52.52 and $54.39 during the day, the price of Brent oil was around $53.55 per barrel as of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT) on Wednesday.

Turkish stocks up at year-end close

Starting the day at 90,675.11 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index climbed 835.15 points from last week's close.

One U.S. dollar traded for 5.2920 Turkish liras at daily close, while the USD/TRY exchange rate was 5.2720 by market close on Friday.

The euro/Turkish lira exchange rate was 6.0550, versus 6.0490 at the previous close.

One British pound traded for 6.7810 Turkish liras, up from Friday's close of 6.7060.

Turkey's Borsa Istanbul flat at open

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index started Thursday up 0.06 percent or 52.87 points to open at 90,253.58 points.

The banking and holding sector indices gained 0.24 percent and 0.02 percent, respectively.

The BIST construction index was the best performer at open with 0.73 percent increase, while the wholesale and retail trade sector index performed the worst — down 0.72 percent.

On Wednesday, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index rose 0.22 percent to close at 90,200.71 points with a trading volume of some 7.48 billion liras ($1.36 billion).

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate climbed to 5.5830 as of 9.30 a.m. local time (0630GMT), compared with Wednesday's closing rate of 5.5450.

The euro/Turkish lira rate was 6.3460 on Thursday morning, versus 6.2780 at the previous close, while one British pound traded for 7.1910 Turkish liras, versus 7.0870 at Wednesday's close.

The price of Brent oil dropped to $74.67 per barrel as of 10 a.m. local time (0700GMT) Thursday, compared to the previous close at $76.07.

One barrel of Brent oil was sold for $66 at the beginning of this year.

Turkey's benchmark stock index up at open

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's stock exchange rose 0.49 percent, or 444,93 points, to open at 90,444.83 points Wednesday.

The banking and holding sector indices rose 0.66 percent and 0.62 percent, respectively.

Among all sector indices, the BIST transportation index started the day as the best performer — up 0.90 percent, while the BIST insurance index performed the worst — down 0.25 percent.

On Tuesday, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 closed at 89,999.90, down 0.60 percent, or 541.63 points, with a trading volume of 5.7 billion Turkish liras (around $1.04 billion).

The USD/TRY exchange rate rose to 5.4980 as of 9.30 a.m. local time (0630GMT) on Wednesday, while it was 5.4740 at Tuesday's close.

The euro/lira exchange rate stood at 6.2380 by market open — from 6.2290 at the previous close — and one British pound traded for 7.0040 Turkish liras over 6.9980 at the previous close.

The price of Brent oil stood at $76.59 per barrel as of 10.00 a.m. local time (0700GMT) Wednesday, compared to $76.18 on Tuesday.

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index ended Tuesday down 0.60 percent to close at 89,999.90 points.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index saw a 541.63-point drop from Friday's close of 90,541.53 points, while it started the day at 90,883.69 points.

Borsa Istanbul was closed on Monday in observance of Turkey's Republic Day.

The market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 totaled 588.02 billion Turkish liras (around $104.65 billion), while the trade volume of the benchmark index was 5.7 billion Turkish liras (around $1.04 billion).

During the trading day, the benchmark index hovered between 88,564.44 points and 91,387.01 points, while 33 stocks on the BIST 100 rose, 64 fell, and three were flat compared to Friday's close.

On Tuesday, the banking sector index gained 2.93 percent, while the holding sector index lost 2.87 percent.

Among all sectors, the BIST banking index was the best performer of the day, while the BIST transportation sector did the worst, as its index fell 5.25 percent.

The top-gaining stocks of the day belonged to energy company Zorlu (ZOREN), up 12.15 percent, while the shares of leading airport operator TAV Airports Holding (TAVHL) fell the most, losing 9.78 percent.

The BIST 100's trade volume leaders on Tuesday were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti, top defense company Aselsan, state-run lender Halkbank, and iron and steel producer Kardemir.

By market close, the U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate fell at 5.4740, versus Friday's close of 5.6350.

The EUR/TRY rate dropped to 6.2290, compared to 6.4030 at the previous close, and one British pound traded for 6.9980 Turkish liras while the GBP/TRY exchange rate was 7.2120 at Friday's close.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold traded for $1,223.30 by market close, down from $1,234.00 at close on Friday.

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at $76.18 per barrel, hovering between $75.28 and $77.38 during the day.

Since the beginning of this year, Brent oil's price has risen from $66 a barrel.

Since the beginning of this year, Brent oil price has risen from $66 a barrel.

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's stock exchange rose 0.38 percent, or 342.16 points, to open at 90,883.69 points on Tuesday.

Borsa Istanbul was closed on Monday due to Turkey's Republic Day.

The banking and holding sector indices gained 0.43 percent and 0.63 percent, respectively.

Among all sector indices, the metal products machinery sector index posted the best performance, up 1.06 percent, and the wholesale and retail trade sector index was the worst, down 0.65 percent.

On Friday, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 closed at 90,541.53, down 3.42 percent, or 3,206.12 points, with a trading volume of 5.74 billion liras ($1.02 billion).

The USD/TRY exchange fell to 5.5550 as of 9.30 a.m. local time (0630GMT) on Tuesday. It was 5.6350 at Friday's close.

The euro/lira exchange rate also dropped to 6.3230 by market open — from 6.4030 at the previous close — and one British pound traded for 7.1240 Turkish liras versus 7.2120 at the previous close.

The price of Brent oil stood at $77.33 per barrel as of 10.00 a.m. local time (0700GMT) Tuesday, while it was sold for $66 at the beginning of this year.

Turkey's Borsa Istanbul flat at open

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's stock exchange fell slightly 3.49 points, to open at 98,987.52 points on Thursday.

The Borsa Istanbul banking sector index dropped 0.31 percent, while BIST holding sector index was up 0.03 percent.

Among all sector indices, the investment trusts sector index posted the best performance, up 0.85 percent, while the banking sector index performed the worst.

On Wednesday, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 closed at 98,991.01, up 0.53 percent, or 524.59 points, with a trade volume of 9.4 billion Turkish liras (around $1.7 billion).

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate fell to 5.6190 as of 9.30 a.m. local time (0630GMT) on Thursday, compared with 5.6950 at Wednesday's close.

The euro/lira exchange rate also dropped to 6.4570 by market open — from 6.5760 at the previous close — and one British pound traded for 7.3550 Turkish liras versus 7.4850 at the previous close.

The price of Brent oil stood at $79.89 per barrel as of 10.00 a.m. local time (07000GMT) Thursday, starting the day at $80.33 — climbing from around $66 at the beginning of 2018.
