5 Sudanese soldiers killed in Yemen

KHARTOUM (AA) – Five Sudanese soldiers have been killed in fighting in war-torn Yemen, a military spokesman said.

Sudan has sent hundreds of its soldiers to fight alongside a Saudi-led Arab coalition against the Houthi group, which overran the capital Sanaa and other provinces in 2014.

“Sudanese forces have carried out some operations during which we lost five soldiers and 22 others were injured,” spokesman Ahmed Khalifa al-Shami said in a statement late Tuesday.

The spokesman, however, did not specify when the troops were killed.

The troops “have successfully completed the first phase (of military attacks) and took control of all the assigned targets and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy,” he said.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched a massive air campaign aimed at reversing Houthi gains and shoring up Yemen’s pro-Saudi government.

According to UN, 11.3 percent of Yemen’s population has been forcibly displaced by the conflict.
