HAVANA (AA) – The U.S. State Department on Thursday clarified information on its website that said Cuban-Americans traveling here could be subjected to a range of restrictions.

“Through our Consular Information Program, the Department of State provides information to U.S. citizens traveling and residing abroad to assist them in making well-informed travel decisions,” according to a statement.

“It was brought to our attention that we were providing inaccurate information on our website regarding children born in the U.S. to Cuban-born parents. We have corrected that inaccurate information.”

The U.S. embassy in Havana had posted information on its website that indicated children of Cuban-born parents would be considered Cuban citizens while in Cuba. As such, their American passports would be invalid while in Cuba.

Cuban-Amercian Eduardo Gomez told Anadolu Agency that he had been trying to get information about the travel warning.

“I called several times to the embassy in Havana and could not get any clarification, because my family was worried about my trip. But, I have traveled to Cuba many times and have never had problems with the authorities,” he said.

Cuban-Americans are taking advantage of the thawing of relations
between the two governments.

Amalia Lopez said that although the previous warning was concerning, she decided to spend her vacation with her family in Cuba.

According to the Cuba tourism ministry, 94,000 Americans arrived in Cuba during the first four months of 2016 – a 93 percent uptick compared to the same period in 2015.

More than 116,000 Cuban Americans visited during that time.
