US planning Afghanistan troop drawdown: Report

By Michael Hernandez</p> <p>WASHINGTON (AA) – U.S. President Donald Trump is planning a &quot;substantial&quot; drawdown of American forces from Afghanistan, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. </p> <p>The extent of the planned move is unclear, but the Journal said it could begin in the coming weeks.</p> <p>The drawdown being considered by the administration is &quot;substantial,&quot; it reported, citing anonymous officials. </p> <p>The U.S. currently has roughly 14,000 troops in Afghanistan and has been in the country since it invaded in 2001 following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. </p> <p>The potential move comes one day after Trump made a surprise announcement that the U.S. would be withdrawing completely from Syria, where it had ground forces working to fight Daesh since 2015. </p> <p>
