UPDATE – Turkey's Borsa Istanbul down at close

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index closed Thursday at 96,121.10 points, down 0.50 percent from previous close.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index fell 482.65 points from Wednesday's close of 96,603.75 points, while it started the day at 97,013.71 points.

At close, the market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 totaled 631.4 billion Turkish liras ($100 billion), while the trade volume of the benchmark index was 10.6 billion Turkish liras ($1.7 billion).

During Thursday's trading, the benchmark index hovered between 95,522.86 points and 97,387.93 points, as 33 stocks on the BIST 100 rose, 62 fell, and three were flat compared to the previous close.

Among all sectors, the BIST mining index was the top gainer of the day, up 5.71 percent, while the BIST banking index did the worst, losing 2.77 percent.

Shares of real estate investment trust Ozderici (OZGYO) showed the best performance — rising 18.87 percent — and stocks of another real estate investment trust Emlak Gayrimenkul (EKGYO) saw the largest decline, dropping 5.15 percent.

The BIST 100's trade volume leaders on Thursday were private lenders Garanti Bankasi, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, another private lender Akbank, iron and steel producer Kardemir, and leading petrochemicals producer Petkim.

As of the daily close, Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding had the top market value on the BIST 100 with some $6.70 billion, followed by iron and steel producer Eregli Demir Celik and energy giant Tupras, with market values of $6.16 billion and $5.10 billion, respectively.

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate was 6.2610 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) Thursday, compared with the previous close of 6.2540.

One euro traded for 7.3790 Turkish liras at close, versus 7.2970 at Wednesday's close. By market close, the GBP/TRY exchange rate was 8.3370, up from 8.2280 at the previous close.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold traded for $1,204.00 at Thursday's close, compared with $1,203.00 at Wednesday's close.

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at $78.78 per barrel, hovering between $78.52 and $79.81 during the day. Since the beginning of this year, Brent oil price has risen from $66 per barrel.
