UNITED NATIONS (AA) – U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said Friday that there should be serious consequences for a “seemingly calculated attack” on a refugee camp in Syria.

Ban said in a statement that was outraged by the attack on the camp near the Syrian village of Sarmada in Idlib province on Thursday that killed at least 28 victims, including women and children.

The camp is home to internally displaced Syrians from Aleppo, Idlib and Latakia. It is roughly 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the Turkish border and about 30 kilometers (20 miles) west of Aleppo.

Ban urged the Security Council to act on the tragic attack.

“Those responsible for yesterday’s seemingly calculated attack against civilians in the camp in Idlib, which could constitute a war crime, must be held accountable,” according to the statement.

It added that the U.N. has been working with humanitarian partners to assess “the needs and mobilizing a response for the families who fled the camp out of fear of further attacks.”
