Turkey’s Borsa Istanbul up at opening

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey’s benchmark index started Tuesday with a 142.78-point increase to open at 89,572.51.

During opening transactions on the second business day of the week, the BIST 100 index rose 0.16 percent.

The banking and holding sector indices went up 0.12 percent and 0.02 percent, respectively.

Among all sectors, the wood-paper printing sector index was the best performer– up 0.66 percent — while the electricity index started the day with the biggest decline, falling 0.14 percent.

At Monday’s closing session, the benchmark index was down 181.67 points, or 0.20 percent, to close at 89,429.73 points, with a total trading volume of 3 billion Turkish liras (approximately $800 million).

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate rose slightly to 3.7490 at 9.30 a.m. local time (0630GMT) on Tuesday, compared with 3.7460 at Monday’s close.

Analysts expect investors will act based on Eurozone industrial production data and the Producer Price Index from the United States, which are set to be released Tuesday.

They noted that fluctuation in markets could continue ahead of a Federal Reserve decision on interest rates Wednesday.
