Turkey: Ex-governor detained over coup attempt

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey’s former governor of northern Sinop province was detained on Friday in Ankara as part of an investigation into the July 15 coup attempt.

Speaking on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, security sources said Yasemin Ozata Cetinkaya was suspended from her position the day after the coup attempt.

Her husband, Colonel Temel Cetinkaya, a commander in Sinop, was remanded by the provincial court on Monday.

Ankara has dismissed tens of thousands of public employees in the military, police, education sector, and civil service as part of a nation wide probe into the failed coup.

The Turkish government has said the failed military coup was organized by followers of U.S.-based preacher Fetullah Gulen.

Gulen is accused of a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through supporters within Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary, forming what is commonly known as the parallel state.

Last Friday’s attempted coup by rogue elements of the military resulted in the martyring of at least 246 people and the injuring of nearly 1,500 others.
