ANTALYA, Turkey (AA) – An army major connected to July 15 coup attempt has been seized while hiding in a wardrobe in Turkey’s Mediterranean province of Antalya, security sources said on Friday.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, said that Major Muammer A. was held by police early Friday as part of an investigation into the thwarted coup and its link with the FETO terror group.

Muammer A. was staying at a relative’s house in Mithatpasa district of Antalya.

According to mobile telephone messages between pro-coup officers which were revealed earlier this week, Muammer A. let the other officers know that there had been heavy fighting in Kuleli, a district on the Asian side of Istanbul, which hosts a military academy. He wrote: “Opening fire at the group”.

He is accused of leading the team that blocked the Bogazici (Bosphorus) Bridge during Friday’s coup attempt.

The Turkish government has said the failed military coup was organized by followers of U.S.-based preacher Fetullah Gulen.

Gulen is accused of a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through supporters within Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary, forming what is commonly known as the parallel state.
