Sudanese central bank to introduce new banknotes

<p>By Nazik Shammam</p> <p><br></p> <p>KHARTOUM (AA) – Sudan’s central bank on Thursday announced plans to introduce several new categories of banknote in February in hopes of easing an ongoing liquidity crisis.</p> <p><br></p> <p>In a statement, bank head Mohamed Khair al-Zubayr said that new 100-Sudanese-pound banknotes (roughly equivalent to $2.10) would be made available early next month.</p> <p><br></p> <p>Over the course of the next two months, he added, 200- and 500-pound banknotes would also be made available.</p> <p><br></p> <p>According to al-Zubayr, the move is aimed at remedying the country’s ongoing shortage of local currency.</p>
