KHARTOUM (AA) – The deputy leader of Sudan's ruling military council, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daqlo, met in Khartoum on Sunday with U.S. charge d'affaires Steven Koutsis.
During the meeting, Daqlo briefed the U.S. envoy on developments in Sudan and the reasons behind the formation of the transitional military council, the council said in a statement.
He also posted Koutsis on “steps taken by the military council to preserve the security and stability of Sudan “, the statement said.
The U.S. envoy, for his part, welcomed the role of the military council in achieving stability and underlined the importance of continued cooperation between the two sides to enhance Sudanese-U.S. relations, according to the statement.
On Thursday, the Sudanese army ousted longtime President Omar al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan since 1989, following months of popular protests against his rule.
The army also established a military council to run the country for a transitional period of two years.
On Saturday, Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, the head of the military council, pledged large-scale political and economic reforms.
In a televised speech, Burhan said the country's two-year transitional period will end with free and fair elections and vowed to put on trial those involved in the killing of the protesters as well as corruption under the old regime.
