KHARTOUM (AA) – South Sudan’s newly-appointed Vice President Taban Deng Gai arrived in the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Sunday for talks on unresolved issues between the two countries.
Deng’s first visit comes a few weeks after he replaced rebel leader Riek Machar as vice president.
He is accompanied by a ministerial delegation during his two-day visit to Khartoum.
Deng’s talks in Khartoum will tackle the outstanding issues between the two countries, including the fees of exporting South Sudan’s oil through Sudan, South Sudan’s ambassador to Khartoum Mayan Dout told Anadolu Agency.
He said the talks are also expected to tackle border demarcation and the disputed Abyei region.
South Sudan has seceded from Sudan in 2011. Since then, the two countries have traded accusations of supporting rebel groups.
In March, Khartoum closed its border with Juba after accusing it of supporting rebel groups in Sudan.
Among the thorny issues is the fees South Sudan pays to export oil via an oil export pipeline through Sudan.
South Sudan’s oil production has virtually ground to a halt since a civil war broke out there in late 2013, when President Salva Kiir accused Machar of plotting a coup.
