YANGON, Myanmar (AA) – Myanmar military said Sunday it had retrieved the black box of a military plane which crashed into the sea off the country’s southern coast last week.
The Chinese-made Y8-200F plane was carrying 124 people including 17 children when it crashed into the Andaman Sea on June 7 during a weekly flight to Yangon from the coastal town of Myeik in southern Tanintharyi region. It was previously reported that there were 122 people aboard including 15 children.
The flight data recorder (Black Box) and CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder) were found in the already retrieved tail of the missing plane on Sunday evening, according to a press statement from the office of Commander-in-Chief Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, raising hopes to find out the cause of the crash, which has yet to be determined
The statement also said that 92 bodies and other small parts of the plane had been recovered from the sea by Sunday.
Navy ships and military aircrafts will continue the search for the remaining victims, it added.
The aircraft tail with the number 5820 was found Thursday tangled in a fishing net under the sea at a depth of 35 meters.
The military chief had earlier in the week said that the weather was likely to have been the main factor in the accident, according to local media reports.
