LAGOS, Nigeria (AA) – At least 11 people were killed and 12 others injured when unknown gunmen opened fire at locals in central Nigeria, police said Monday.

The victim of the attack late on Sunday was the Lo Pamyeti community of Plateau state.

“We got a distress call at around 9.30 p.m. that the community was under attack and we quickly mobilized to the area but we met some people lying lifeless while others were crying for help,” Plateau police spokesman Tyopev Mathias told Anadolu Agency.

“We quickly evacuated them to the University of Jos teaching hospital and Special Hospital in Jos where 11 persons were confirmed dead while the remaining 12 are now receiving treatment.”

No arrests have been made yet as the authority launched an investigation into the incident.

Monday's attack comes a week after eight people were killed in the state while 95 houses were razed and 310 cattle stolen.

After two years of peace, clashes between farmers and herdsmen have erupted in the state.
