EU to abandon switch between summer and winter time

BERLIN (AA) – The European Union is planning to abandon the current practice of switching between summer and winter time, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Friday.

In an interview with German public television ZDF, Juncker said millions of European citizens demanded an end to the current arrangements, in a survey conducted by the European Commission.

“If one is asking the view of citizens on that matter, then one should also do what the citizens have said,” he stressed, adding that the European Commission would discuss the matter on Friday.

After the European Commission’s proposal, the final decision on abandoning the bi-annual time switch will be taken by the European Parliament and the EU member states.

It would ultimately remain each member state's decision whether to go for a permanent summer or winter time.
