Borsa Istanbul up at close

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index closed Tuesday up 0.99 percent, hitting 106,259.99 points.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index gained 1,045.11 points from Monday's close of 105,214.87 points with a total trading volume of 6.4 billion Turkish liras (nearly $1.6 billion).

The banking and holding sector indices gained 1.91 and 1.62 percent, respectively.

Among all sector indices, the best performer was informatics with 2.41 percent while the financial leasing and factoring sector index saw the biggest fall with 1.08 percent.

The top five most-traded stocks were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, state-owned Halkbank, private lender Garanti, defense giant Aselsan and another private lender, Akbank.

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate dropped to 3.8690 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) Tuesday, down from 3.8970 at Monday's close.

The euro/lira exchange rate also decreased to 4.5800, down from Monday's close of 4.6180.

The BIST Gold Exchange index lost 0.04 percent in value, while the price of gold per kilogram fell to 159,050 Turkish liras (around $41,391) as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT), compared with Monday's closing price of 161,682 Turkish liras (around $42,073).

As of 6.30 p.m. local time (1530GMT) Tuesday, the price of brent oil was $62.66 per barrel, compared with $62.81 of previous close.
