SANAA (AA) – Yemeni government forces have shot down an unmanned aerial drone operated by the Shia Houthi group in northwestern Yemen, according to the Yemeni army.
In a Wednesday statement posted on Facebook, the army said the Houthi drone had been downed while strafing army positions in the Midi district of Yemen’s northwestern Hajjah province.
The media wing of the Yemeni army’s Fifth Military Zone published two images that it said depicted the drone that was downed.
There has been no comment by either the Houthi leadership or a Saudi-led anti-Houthi coalition regarding the Yemeni army’s claim.
Yemen has been racked by chaos since 2014, when the Houthis overran capital Sanaa and other parts of the country, forcing members of Yemen’s Saudi-backed government to temporarily flee to Riyadh.
Last year, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched a massive air campaign in Yemen aimed at reversing Houthi military gains and restoring the embattled government.
Two rounds of UN-backed peace talks have failed to resolve the raging conflict, in which thousands of Yemenis are believed to have been killed and an estimated 2.5 million forced to flee their homes.
