ANKARA (AA) – Tennis veterans Serena Williams of the U.S. and Roger Federer from Switzerland advanced to the third round of the 2020 Australian Open on Wednesday.
The world no. 9 in females, Williams beat Slovenian opponent Tamara Zidansek with the sets of 6-2, 6-3 in the second round at Rod Laver Arena.
The 2017 Australian Open winner, Williams, 38, will face Qiang Wang from China in the next round.
Separately, 38-year-old Federer — ranked third in men's standings — eliminated Serbia's Filip Krajinovic with the sets of 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 to march to the third round.
Federer, the 2018 Australian Open champion, will take on Australian player John Millman in the next round.
In addition to Williams and Federer, 24-year-old American tennis player Madison Keys qualified for the third round, beating her Dutch opponent Arantxa Rus 7-6, 6-2 in Wednesday's night session.
Keys will face Maria Sakkari from Greece in the women's singles third round.
The 108th edition of the Australian Open will run from Jan. 20 through Feb. 2.
