Wall Street opens higher on gains in tech stocks

NEW YORK (AA) – The American stock market opened higher Monday with rising stocks of tech companies beginning the week on a higher outlook.

The Dow was up 40 points and reached 17,814 while the S&P 500 rose 4 points to 2,069, and the Nasdaq added one point to begin the day at 4,775.

After recording losses last week, the stocks of major tech companies in the U.S. began with increases on Monday.

Shares of Amazon, Google and Microsoft gained around one percent each.

The world’s second biggest oil field services company Halliburton increased more than 2 percent Monday, while the world’s third largest oil field services firm, Baker Hughes, saw its shares decline around 0.5 percent.

The two giants called off their $34.6 billion merger deal Sunday due to “remaining regulatory approvals and general industry conditions that severely damaged deal economics,” according to a joint statement.

Meanwhile, oil prices were in decline Monday.

At the stock market opening, American benchmark West Texas Intermediate was down 1.4 percent to trade at $44.28 per barrel, and the international benchmark Brent crude was around $46.29, a 2 percent decrease.
