Video assistant referees set to be used at World Cup

GENEVA (AA) – Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system has been set to be used at the World Cup 2018 in Russia as the system was approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

The meeting of IFAB meeting took place at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland on Saturday, where the members unanimously approved the use of the VAR.

Following the meeting, FIFA President Gianni Infantino told reporters: “The decision on the World Cup in Russia on VAR will be taken at the next Council meeting in Colombia on 16 March. ”

“It will have a positive impact on the World Cup and on the matches, this is what the result of studies show, ” Infantino said.

According to the decision, VAR will be used in four specific cases: goals, penalties, direct red cards and mistaken identity.
