WASHINGTON (AA) – Top U.S. senators on Wednesday called for an investigation into the disappearance of a Saudi journalist under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.

Jamal Khashoggi has not been heard from since Oct. 2, when he visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The act allows the president to impose sanctions on a person or country that has engaged in a human rights violation.

In a letter, the leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and other lawmakers
urged President Donald Trump to consider imposing sanctions “with respect to any foreign person responsible for such a violation related to Mr. Khashoggi “.
