US: At least 14 dead from Alabama storms, tornado

WASHINGTON (AA) – At least 14 people have been killed by massive storms and an apparent tornado in eastern Alabama, according to local media reports.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirmed the death toll in remarks to CBS-affiliate WRBL-TV, stressing that search and rescue operations are ongoing.

The tornado that struck Lee County was followed by another possible tornado Weedon Field Airport in Eufaula, Alabama, according to AL.com.

The news website reported storm damage in at least six counties in Alabama.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey urged residents to remain vigilant amid the possibility for additional severe weather, voicing condolences to the deceased and their families.

“Our hearts go out to those who lost their lives in the storms that hit Lee County today. Praying for their families & everyone whose homes or businesses were affected. Officials from @AlabamaEma & other agencies are quickly working to provide assistance, ” Ivey wrote on Twitter.

Multiple tornado warnings were issued in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina as the severe weather pattern tore through the region, according to The Associated Press.
