US: Another suspicious package sent to CNN

WASHINGTON (AA) – A suspicious package has been intercepted on its way to CNN's Atlanta, Georgia, headquarters, the network's president said Monday.

“All mail, at all CNN domestic bureaus, is being screened at off-site facilities as of last Wednesday, so this package would NOT have come directly to the CNN Center, even if it hadn't been intercepted first, ” Jeff Zucker said. “Our screening process is working and we will keep you updated as we learn more. ”

He said the package does not present an “imminent danger ” to the CNN Center.

CNN, along with prominent critics of U.S. President Donald Trump, were targeted last week in a spate of mailings involving explosive devices. In addition to the television network, the homes of former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton were targeted, as well as the Manhattan office of actor Robert De Niro.

Police apprehended Cesar Sayoc, 56, on Friday in connection with the crimes.

He faces five federal crimes, including transportation of an explosive and threatening a former president of the U.S. He could face up to 58 years in prison.

Sayoc was photographed at numerous rallies for U.S. President Donald Trump, and his social media accounts contained virulent pro-Trump messages and conspiracy theories, as well as threats to prominent Democrats.

“Let this be a lesson to anyone, regardless of their political beliefs, that we will bring the full force of law against anyone who attempts to use threats and intimidation and outright violence to further an agenda, ” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said shortly after Sayoc's arrest was made public.

The FBI said a connection was made to Sayoc using DNA evidence from a fingerprint that was found on one of the packages that was sent to congresswoman Maxine Waters.

FBI Director Chris Wray confirmed at least 13 explosive devices were sent to individuals across the country as of last week.

It is unclear if additional packages have yet to be found.

Sayoc is slated to appear in court Monday.
