WASHINGTON (AA) – Multiple people, including a police officer, have been killed in a shootout in the U.S. state of New Jersey, authorities said Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters at a press briefing, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said a police officer was killed and three others were injured plus a civilian in the city.

One police officer was shot in the shoulder and two others suffered shrapnel injuries, said the mayor, adding there were "multiple deceased".

Earlier in the day, according to New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, an unknown number of officers were shot.

Residents and schoolchildren in Jersey City are currently under lockdown.

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the situation remains fluid.

"We were working closely with local, county, state and federal partners to ensure the safety of everyone involved," he added.
