UPDATE – US: 5 dead in Illinois shooting

CHANGES HEAD, DECK, ADDS DETAILS THROUGHOUT</p> <p>By Umar Farooq</p> <p>WASHINGTON (AA) – Five people were killed Friday when a gunman opened fire at a manufacturing company in Aurora, Illinois.</p> <p>Police responded to reports of an active shooter at Henry Pratt Co.</p> <p>They searched through the 29,000-square-foot building until they located the gunman. A shootout ensued and they ended up killing him.</p> <p>He was later identified as Gary Martin, 45, who is believed to be an employee at the manufacturing facility, according to Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman.</p> <p>Five police officers were also injured and have been transported to nearby hospitals.</p> <p>&quot;Thank you for your selfless act. Thank you for running toward the gunfire and putting your lives in danger to protect those inside the business,&quot; Ziman said about the injured officers at a news conference.</p> <p>The shooter’s motive has not yet been determined.</p> <p>&quot;It is a shame that mass shootings such as this have become commonplace in our country,&quot; Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin said at a news conference.
