UPDATE – Turkish stocks up over 1 pct at close

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index went up 1.02 percent to close at 94,570.90 points on Monday.

Starting the day at 93,568.15 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index ended the day with a 954.45-point hike from last week's close.

During Monday's trading, the BIST 100 peaked at 94,602.73 points, while 66 stocks on the index rose, 23 fell and 11 were flat compared with the previous close.

The country's national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, lenders Garanti Bankasi and Halkbank posted the highest trade volumes, as the BIST 100's daily trade volume was around 5.78 billion Turkish liras ($1.08 billion).

The benchmark index had a total market value of some 614 billion liras ($115 billion) at close, while the leading companies were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($7.12 billion), Garanti Bankasi ($6.36 billion), and energy giant Tupras ($5.86 billion).

Stocks of Sekerbank (SKBNK), a Turkish lender, showed the best performance, up 19.59 percent, and shares of Turkish conglomerate Ittifak Holding (ITTFH) dropped 5.65 percent, the worst performance on Monday.

Among all sectors, the BIST mining index was the top gainer, rising 3.88 percent, as the BIST metal products machinery index recorded the largest decline, falling 1.57 percent.

By market close, the U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate was 5.3350, up from 5.3410 at the previous close.

The euro/Turkish lira rate stood at 6.1000, compared with 6.0930 at close on Friday.

The GBP/TRY exchange rate was 6.8670 at close, while one British pound traded for 6.8840 Turkish liras at the previous close.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold was sold for $1,220.00 at close on Monday, up from $1,215.85 at Friday's close.

Hovering between $65.28 and $67.63 during the day, the price of Brent oil was around $66.30 per barrel as of 6.45 p.m. local time (1545GMT) Monday.
