UPDATE – Turkish stocks up 1.11 pct at midweek close

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock surged 1.11 percent to close at 92,707.95 points on Wednesday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index rose 1,021.60 points from the previous close, as it started the midweek trading day at 92,021.50 points.

During Wednesday's trading, the BIST 100's daily high and low were 92,707.95 points and 91,559.38 points, respectively, compared with the previous close 61 stocks on the index rose, 30 fell and nine were flat.

Leading listed companies by market value were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($6.83 billion), private lender Garanti Bankasi ($6.33 billion), and energy company Tupras ($5.69 billion).

As of midweek market close, the BIST 100's total value was 602.3 billion liras ($113 billion).

National flag carrier Turkish Airlines, Garanti Bankasi, energy company Ipek Dogal Enerji had the highest trade volumes, as the daily trade volume of the benchmark index was 6.25 billion Turkish liras ($1.17 billion).

Stocks of Ipek Dogal Enerji (IPEKE) saw the highest increase with a 15.82-percent daily hike, while shares of chemical and paint producer Polisan Holding (POLHO) suffered the largest decline, going down 6.63 percent.

The BIST mining index was the top gainer among all sectors — up 4.76 percent –, and the BIST insurance index dropped the most, falling 1.97 percent.

By market close, the USD/TRY exchange rate was 5.3180, down from Tuesday's close of 5.3650. The EUR/TRY rate was 6.0670, while one euro traded for 6.1250 liras at the previous close.

The British pound/Turkish lira exchange rate was 6.8170, while it was 6.8970 at close on Tuesday.

At daily close, the price of one ounce of gold was $1,224.25 in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, versus $1,224.50 at the previous close.

Hovering between $62.27 and $63.95 during the day, the price of Brent oil was around $63.45 per barrel as of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT) Wednesday.
