UPDATE – Turkish stocks end week up

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index ended the week up 0.30% to close at 94,783.14 points on Friday.

After starting the day at 94,886.81 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index surged 284.6 points from 94,498.54 points at Thursday's close.

On a weekly basis, the benchmark index posted a 2.14% decline, although it has climbed 6.65% from 88,865.01 points at the close on the first business day of 2019.

Peaking at 95,144.78 points, the BIST 100's daily low was 94,046.19 points during Friday's trading — 49 stocks on the index rose, 36 fell, and 15 were flat compared to the previous close.

Closing the week with a market value of some 627.5 billion Turkish liras ($106.5 billion), the benchmark index posted a daily trading volume of 4.63 billion Turkish liras ($780 million).

Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($6.98 billion) and private lenders Garanti BBVA ($5.77 billion) and Akbank ($5.45 billion) were the BIST 100's leading companies by market capitalization.

Stocks of Garanti BBVA, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, and state lender Halkbank posted the highest trading volumes on Friday — accounting for nearly 37.4% of the benchmark index's total trade volume.

Shares of conglomerate Ittifak Holding (ITTFH) performed the best, rising 10.96%, as chemical and paint producer Polisan Holding (POLHO) saw the biggest drop, falling 11.50%.

One ounce of gold sold for $1,282 at the weekly close in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, versus $1,277 at Thursday's close.

The price of Brent oil was $71.83 per barrel as of 6.15 p.m. local time (1515GMT) on Friday — with a day range of $71.31 to $74.42.

At the beginning of 2019, a barrel of Brent oil sold for around $53.
