UPDATE – Turkish stocks down at midweek close

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index ended the midweek down 0.37% to close at 1,107.11 points on Wednesday.

After starting at 1,113.34 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index decreased 4.13 points from 1,111.24 points at Tuesday's close.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 819 billion Turkish liras ($109 billion) by market close, with a daily trading volume of 11.4 billion Turkish liras ($1.5 billion).

On Wednesday, the BIST 100 hovered between 1,111.36 and 1,116.57 points — 48 stocks on the index rose, five fell, and the remaining were flat compared to the previous close.

The highest trading volumes were posted by chemical producer Petkim, iron/steel producer Kardemir, polyester producer Sasa Sasa Polyester.

The paper-carton producer Kartonsan was the best performer, with its shares up 10%, while stocks of conglomerate Alarko Holding dropped the most, losing 3.19%.

The price of one ounce of gold was $1,964.00 by market close, down from $1,964.40 at the previous close, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $41.93 per barrel as of 6.15 p.m. local time (1515GMT) on Wednesday.
