UPDATE – Turkey's Borsa Istanbul up at midweek close

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index closed the midweek at 109,778.94 points on Wednesday, up 0.5% from the previous close.

Starting the day at 109,599.77 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index rose 542.41 points as of daily close from Tuesday's close of 109,236.52 points.

During Wednesday's trading, the BIST 100's daily low was 109,391.57 points while it peaked at 110,321.53 points — 51 stocks on the index rose, two fell, and the remaining were flat compared to the previous close.

Closing the day with a market value of nearly 786 billion Turkish liras ($115 billion), the benchmark index posted a daily trading volume of around 16.3 billion Turkish liras ($2.40 billion).

The shares of real estate investment trust Emlak Konut, private lender Garanti BBVA, and defense giant Aselsan saw the highest trading volumes.

The stocks of cement producer Akcansa performed the best, rising 9.96%, while shares of wholesale trade company Bizim Magazalar did the worst, losing 2.89%.

One ounce of gold sold for $1,724.60 by market close, up from $1,709.00 at the previous close, according to the data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $40.61 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT).
