UPDATE – Turkey's Borsa Istanbul down at close

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index slipped 3.38 percent to close at 90,262.95 points Wednesday with a trading volume of around 11.2 billion Turkish liras ($1.83 billion).

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index ended the day with a 3,155.7-point decrease from Tuesday's close of 93,418.65 points, while it opened the midweek trading day at 95,040.93 points.

The benchmark index hovered between 90,131.54 points and 95,245.00 points, while nine stocks on the index were on the rise, 90 on the decline, and one flat compared to the previous close.

The total market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 was around 595.78 billion Turkish liras ($91 billion) at close, while the banking and holding sector indices declined 4.08 percent and 1.43 percent, respectively.

Among all sectors, the leasing factoring sector index was the best performer, rising 3.60 percent, and the telecommunication sector index saw the biggest drop, losing 8.82 percent.

Shares of bedding and furniture company Yatas climbed the most, up 10.10 percent, while stocks of food giant Ulker Biskuvi did the worst, falling 9.80 percent.

The BIST 100's most-traded listed companies were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, defense company Aselsan, private lender Garanti, leading petrochemicals producer Petkim and iron/steel producer Kardemir.

The USD/TRY exchange fell to 6.0690 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT), down from 6.5410 at Tuesday's close.

The euro/lira exchange rate dropped to 6.8710 by market close, versus 7.4500 at the previous close, while the British pound/lira exchange rate was down at 7.5990, compared with 8.3740 at Tuesday's close.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold traded for $1,184.00 as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT) Wednesday, down from $1,191.90 at the previous close.

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at $70.61 per barrel — hovering between $71.21 and $72.45 Wednesday.
