UPDATE – Turkey's benchmark stock index ends day down

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index fell 1.28 percent to close at 93,468.99 points on Tuesday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index started the day at 94,080.42 points and ended the day down 1,212.71 points from the previous close.

The BIST 100's daily peak was 94,442.93 points while it fell to 92,344.89 points during Tuesday's trading. Compared with the previous close, 10 stocks on the index rose, 85 fell, and five were flat.

On the second trading day, all sector indices went down while the BIST textile leather index posted the biggest drop, falling 3.30 percent.

Shares of Turkish conglomerate Ittifak Holding (ITTFH), were the top gainers with a 3.25-percent hike, and stocks furniture manufacturer Dogtas Kelebek Mobilya (DGKLB) lost the most, going down 7.07 percent.

The benchmark index daily trade volume was 7.25 billion liras ($1.25 billion), while lender Garanti Bankasi, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, defense company Aselsan, lenders Halkbank and Akbank recorded the highest trade volumes.

The BIST 100 ended Tuesday with a total market value of around 612 billion liras ($108 billion), as leading companies were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($7 billion), iron and steel producer Eregli Demir Celik ($6.1 billion), and energy giant Tupras ($5.9 billion).

As of daily close, the U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate reached 5.7910, versus Monday's closing rate of 5.6790.

The euro/lira rate was 6.6420, compared to 6.5210 at the previous close, and one British pound exchanged for 7.5270 liras, as the GBP/TRY was 7.3780 at Monday's close.

One ounce of gold was sold for $1,234.50 at Tuesday's close in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, while the price was $1,224.00 at the previous close.

The price of Brent oil was around $77.63 per barrel as of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), hovering between $77.56 and $80.09 during Tuesday's trading.

Since the beginning of this year, Brent oil price has risen from $66 a barrel.
