UPDATE – Coronavirus case tally rises in five Arab states

ANKARA (AA) – Health authorities in Arab countries reported new cases of the novel coronavirus Saturday.

Morocco's Health Ministry confirmed one fatality from the virus, taking the nationwide death toll to 173.

It said 160 new cases were detected over the past 24 hours, raising the total COVID-19 infections to 4,729.

In Lebanon, the Health Ministry said one person had died from the virus, bringing the death toll to 25.

According to the ministry, four new infections were registered, taking the total cases in the country to 733.

Bahrain's health authorities said the virus case tally rose to 3,273 after 103 infections were reported.

The Gulf state has so far confirmed five deaths from the pandemic.

Qatar's Health Ministry said 776 people had tested positive for the virus over the past 24 hours, taking the total COVID-19 cases to 14,872.

The Health Ministry in Oman also registered 36 new infections, bringing the total coronavirus cases to 2,483.

Officials in Jordan said one person died from the virus while another was infected.

It has 460 coronavirus cases while a total of nine patients died due to the pandemic.

The health ministry in Iraq said the death toll increased to 95. A total of 2,219 cases were confirmed while 1,473 people recovered from the virus.

The Egyptian Health Ministry announced the death toll as 415.

Coronavirus cases increased to 6,193 with 298 new cases, the ministry added.

Algerian health authorities recorded 459 deaths.

The number of coronavirus cases increased to 4,295 with 141 new cases.

A total of 1,877 people recovered from the novel virus.

In the United Arab Emirates, the health ministry confirmed eight more deaths due to the coronavirus, raising the tally to 119.

A total of 561 people were infected by the virus Saturday taking the total tally to 13,599. More than 2,660 people recovered from the virus.

In Yemen, authorities confirmed three more COVID-19 cases, bringing the toll to 10.

More than 3.4 million cases have been reported in 187 countries and regions since the virus emerged in China last December, with the US and Europe the world’s hardest-hit areas.

A significant number of COVID-19 patients – nearly 1.1 million – have recovered, but the disease has also claimed more than 242,000 lives, according to data compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
