UPDATE – Borsa Istanbul down at close

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index closed Monday down 1.69 percent at 91,698.34 points with a trading volume of around 5.2 billion Turkish liras ($800 million).

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index ended the day with a 1.575,81-point decrease from Friday's close of 93,274.15 points, while it opened the day at 93.532,90 points, up 0.28 percent.

The benchmark index hovered between 91,698.34 points and 93,662.58 points, while 10 stocks were on the rise, 89 on the decline, and one flat compared to the previous close.

The total market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 was 603.4 billion liras ($93.3 billion) at close, while the banking and holding sectors indices declined 3.23 percent and 1.92 percent, respectively.

Among all sectors, the leasing, factoring sector index was the best performer, up 2.54 percent, and the mining sector index saw the biggest drop, down 4.25 percent.

Stocks of leasing company IS Finansal Kiralama (ISFIN) climbed the most, up 3.67 percent, while shares of real estate investment trusts firm Alarko Gmyo (ALGYO) suffered the worst, falling 5.56 percent.

The BIST 100's most traded listed companies were private lender Garanti, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, defense company Aselsan, leading petrochemicals producer Petkim and iron/steel producer Kardemir.

The USD/TRY exchange rate rose to 6.4620 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) Monday, compared with 6.4500 at Friday's close.

The euro/lira exchange rate also increased to 7.5010 by market close, versus 7.4690 at the previous close, while the British pound/lira exchange rate reached 8.4160 Turkish liras, compared with 8.3620 at Friday's close.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold traded for $1,193.80 as of 5.30 p.m. local time (1430GMT) Monday, compared with $1,195.00 at the previous close.

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), the price of Brent oil rose to $77.28 per barrel, compared with $76.83 at the previous close.
