ADDS DETAIL

NEW YORK (AA) – Three U.S. police officers are feared dead after being shot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, according to media reports.

Conflicting accounts about casualties are being reported from local and national media.

A total of seven officers have been shot, with 3 dead and the remaining in critical condition, CNN quoted an unnamed source with knowledge of the investigation as saying.

Mayor Kip Holden told CNN that “the count is three officers dead possibly.”

The shooter is believed to be shot as well, Holden told the network. His status is unclear. There are also unconfirmed reports of multiple shooters.

“The situation is very fluid,” Holden told the WAFB local television station.

WAFB reported as many as seven officers have been shot and 2 are dead, adding that the families of the deceased officers have been informed.

The shooting took place on Airline Highway, 2-3 miles from the Baton Rouge Police Department.

Various reports suggest the area is contained, with pictures on social media showing police officers standing guard in heavy gear with rifles.
