ROME (AA) – A 6.5 magnitude earthquake shook Italy’s central region on Sunday, according to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.
The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (six miles) in Norcia — a town in Perugia, central Italy — 7.40 a.m. local time (0440GMT). It was followed by several aftershocks.
The earthquake was strongly felt in Rome and Florence.
Italian Civil Protection chief Fabrizio Curcio told reporters that no deaths had been reported, but there were some injuries.
According to sources from the Italian Civil Protection, there are about 10 injured people, including one in a serious condition.
Italian channel Rai News 24 said several buildings had been damaged by the earthquake.
The central region of Italy had already been struck by an earthquake in August, in which nearly 300 people had been killed.
Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey, or USGS, established the magnitude at 6.6.
