GENEVA (AA) – UN-led peace talks between Yemen’s warring parties scheduled for later this week was postponed, according to a source close to UN Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths on Wednesday.
Representatives from all parties in Yemen were scheduled to meet Thursday with Griffiths in Geneva.
The source, who asked to not to be named due to restrictions on talking to media, said the talks would not be held Thursday without specifying the reasons for the postponement.
The source also gave no further details on any possible new date for the start of the talks.
Impoverished Yemen has remained wracked by conflict since 2014, when Shia Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including the capital of Sanaa.
The conflict escalated the following year when Saudi Arabia and its Sunni-Arab allies launched a wide-ranging air campaign aimed at rolling back Houthi gains in Yemen.
The violence has devastated the country’s infrastructure, prompting the UN to describe the situation as “one of the worst humanitarian disasters of modern times.”
