UN chief congratulates Putin on reelection

MOSCOW (AA) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on his reelection in a phone call.

Putin and Guterres also discussed international affairs, the Kremlin said Wednesday in a statement published on its official website.

While discussing the situation in Syria, the two sides stressed the importance of the UN’s coordinating role in restoring peace and achieving a political solution in that country, it said in the statement.

An invitation for Guterres to visit Russia was also confirmed.

On Sunday, Russia’s Central Election Commission announced that Putin had won a landslide reelection victory.

Putin scored a record 76.67 percent of the vote with 99.75 percent of the ballots counted, easily winning a new six-year term.
