UK’s easyJet pilots vote for strike action over fatigue

LONDON (AA) – Pilots at easyJet, one of Europe’s largest low-cost airlines, have voted overwhelmingly for industrial action in a dispute over pilot fatigue.

Members of the British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) voted for the action by a 96-4 percent margin on a turnout of 88 percent, the labor union said in a statement issued Wednesday.

Pilots at easyJet have been in dispute with the airline over fatigue levels, which the union claims have risen year on year.

But BALPA said no strike dates would be announced while the union considered a fresh offer from the airline.

General Secretary Brian Strutton said: “BALPA has now received a last-minute offer from easyJet to resolve the dispute and we will consider this carefully in meetings tomorrow before taking any further decisions.

“For clarity that means there are no plans for pilots taking industrial action in easyJet at this stage. We will issue further information tomorrow.”

EasyJet, which flies 600 routes across 30 countries in Europe and North Africa, is the world’s second-largest airline by international passenger numbers.
