UK man faces terror charges after explosives find

LONDON (AA) – Police have charged a 28-year-old man with terrorism offenses after officers discovered explosives at a house in the West Midlands region of England.

Zahid Hussain was charged on Monday with preparing for acts of terrorism after being arrested earlier this month.

He will appear for an initial court hearing in Birmingham on Tuesday.

A statement by West Midlands Police said Hussain had initially been arrested for possessing an “offensive weapon in public.”

But a subsequent search by detectives at a property in Birmingham’s Alum Rock suburb on June 9 uncovered explosives and other materials.

Police said there was no immediate risk to the public and added Hussain had been detained under mental health legislation since his arrest.

Britain’s Mental Health Act allows the authorities to keep people diagnosed with a mental disorder in hospital or in police custody.
