Uganda: UN urges global community to solve conflicts

ARUA, Uganda- The UN secretary general on Thursday urged the international community to step up its efforts in solving existing conflicts and preventing new disputes.

Antonio Guterres was speaking at the Imvempi refugee reception center in northern Uganda’s Arua district. “We need to boost our diplomatic efforts to allow for conflicts to be solved and to mobilize more resources to prevent new conflict,” he said.

After meeting refugees, he said that the people in South Sudan do not deserve the present leadership.

“The people are suffering enormously with this endless war. It’s time for the leaders of South Sudan to understand that they need to stop this war,” he said.

Guterres is in the country to co-host the Uganda Solidarity Summit on Refugees in its commercial capital Kampala on Friday. He will be accompanied by Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni.

The two-day summit hopes to raise $8 billion for the 1.2 million refugees in Uganda.
