Turkey’s unemployment rate rose to 10.7 pct in July

ANKARA (AA) – The unemployment rate in Turkey rose 0.9 percentage point in July year-on-year, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) revealed Monday.

The number of unemployed persons aged 15 and over rose to 3.32 million in May 2016, an increase of 354,000 from the previous year. Turkey’s unemployment rate advanced to 10.7 percent.

Monday’s report showed unemployment increased for the third month in a row in July after improving to 9.3 percent in last April.

The employment rate in July was 47 percent, down 0.2 percent from the same period last year, despite Turkish the economy adding 292,000 jobs — an indication that the growth in the number of people seeking a job had outpaced job creation.

Turkey’s labor force participation rate also rose 0.3 percentage point in July year-on-year to 52.7 percent.

The number of women participating in the workforce increased 0.6 percentage point from the previous year to 33 percent, the report showed. The same rate was unchanged, suggesting overall growth of the labor force participation rate was driven by women.
