Turkey’s oldest neighborhood official reelected

By Izzet Mazi</p> <p>KILIS, Turkey (AA) – Turkey’s oldest neighborhood official (mukhtar) was reelected in the Guvendik village located in southern province of Kilis.</p> <p>Speaking to Anadolu Agency, 93-year-old Ali Hamurlu said he served as mukhtar for 40 years and will continue his duty for the next five years.</p> <p>After the votes were counted, youths in the village visited the office of mukhtar and met with Hamurlu.</p> <p>Hamurlu gave various suggestions to youth such as avoid alcohol consumption and smoking.</p> <p>Servet Yavuz, one of the residents of the village, said they were very confident about Hamurlu and glad that he will serve one more term.</p> <p>On March 31, millions of Turkish voters cast their ballots in the local elections to choose Turkey’s mayors, city council members, mukhtars (neighborhood officials), and members of elder councils for the next five years.</p> <p> </p> <p>*Writing by Gozde Bayar
