ANKARA (AA) – Turkish security forces killed 29 PKK terrorists over the previous seven days, the military said Friday.

In a regular statement on counter-terrorism operations in east and southeast Turkey, the Turkish General Staff said five senior terrorists were among those killed.

The statement also detailed the seizure of 63 improvized explosive devices, nine rocket-propelled grenade launchers, 54 rifles, two machine guns and 21 pistols, as well as bomb-making equipment. Security forces also destroyed 44 PKK shelters.

In a separate statement, the military said five PKK terrorists were killed early Friday in Cukurca and Semdinli districts. Both are in Hakkari province, which borders Iraq and Iran.

The terrorists were attempting to “infiltrate” security posts when they were killed, the statement added.

The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU, has waged a campaign against Turkey since 1984, during which more than 40,000 people have been killed.

The group resumed its armed campaign in July 2015 after a fragile cease-fire, since when more than 1,200 people have been killed.
