TUNIS (AA) – Hundreds of thousands of Tunisian civil servants on Thursday staged a general strike to demand an increase in the wages.

The strike — organized by Tunisian General Union of Labor — came after the failure of a related round of negotiations with the government.

Nearly 700,000 public sector employees have been reportedly participated in it, so far.

Workers from transportation and oil sectors are also expected to attend the strike.

On Wednesday, Tunisian government said it respects the right to strike and peaceful demonstration as guaranteed by the Constitution and laws.

The country witnesses the third general strike since the January 2011 revolution.

Tunisia was the birthplace of the “Arab Spring ” uprisings that swept the Middle East and North Africa in early 2011 which overthrew the regime of the authoritarian ruler, Zein Al Abidine Ben Ali.
