EDIRNE (AA) – Turkey’s Trakya University on Monday marked the Turkish Language Day, an annual celebration by Turks in North Macedonia.

This year's program was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Aktan Ago, North Macedonia’s consul general in Istanbul, said the number of Macedonian students receiving education in Turkish has gradually increased in recent years.

Turkish education is continuing for centuries, he said, adding that about 1,300 students in the southeastern European country learn in Turkish.

Erhan Tabakoglu, the rector of Trakya University, said most students of Balkans origin preferred this institution, and as many as 230 students from North Macedonia were registered in the university currently.

The day is being observed on Dec. 21 every year since 2007.
