'The EU, not smugglers, should decide who to let in'

BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) – The governments of EU countries — not human traffickers — should decide what asylum-seekers are admitted into countries of the bloc, said Austria’s chancellor on Thursday.

Sebastian Kurz's remarks came at the regional economic conference Montenegro 2018 in the city of Budva.

He stressed the importance of combating human trafficking in order to ensure border security in every country.

Referring to a recent immigrant crisis in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia, Kurz thanked Western Balkan countries for their attitude in helping resolve the crisis.

Austria currently holds the rotating EU presidency, and Kurz is known for his anti-immigrant views.

Countries of the western Balkans should stop irregular asylum-seekers, he said.

“These countries helped speed up the closure process of the Western Balkans route, ” said Kurz.
