ANKARA (AA) – A dengue fever outbreak has killed 71 people in Thailand in 2018, according to the Health Ministry.

The ministry said in a Sunday statement that more than 57,000 people in 27 regions have been affected by the disease since January.

It also said this year’s dengue death toll doubled the figures in 2017 compared to the same time period.

Dengue fever virus transmitted to people through mosquitoes. The disease, which causes mild fever, can be fatal in some cases.

Cases usually increase between June-September, and December-March, known as precipitation seasons.

Scientists warn that high temperatures and prolonged rains cause an increase in mosquitoes carrying malaria and dengue.
