Special event celebrates Guler’s photography in Athens

ATHENS (AA) – The work of the prominent Turkish photographer Ara Guler was celebrated Thursday night in Greek capital Athens with a special show of “The Eye of Istanbul” – an award winning documentary on the artist.

The event was hosted jointly by Turkish embassy in Athens and the Benaki Museum to celebrate the life and work of Guler who is also greatly admired by Greek art lovers.

“In his 87 years, Ara Guler remains a complex and unforgettable personality: perceptive, witty and philosophical. Although he became known from his surveys of human life and important historical events since the Second World War in Istanbul, Turkey, he has made an international career for more than sixty years and has created more than one million photos,” the museum said.

The event followed by an exhibition of a selection of the artist’s photographs was also attended by Turkey’s ambassador to Athens Kerim Uras and Istanbul mayor Ahmet Misbah Demircan.

The award-winning documentary by Binnur Karaevli and Fatih Kaymak portrays the legendary photographer, during his preparation of a retrospective exhibition in Istanbul.

Ara Guler who considers himself a historian and mostly recognized for his black and white prints has captured the lives of people and the most important events since the 50’s.
