JOHANNESBURG (AA) – Queen Shiyiwe Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu 65, has passed away only a month after becoming regent of the Zulu nation, South Africa’s largest ethnic group, the royal family has announced with “deepest shock and distress.”
“The Royal family announces the unexpected passing of her majesty Queen Shiyiwe Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu,” Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, prime minister to the Zulu nation, announced Thursday night.
Mantfombi became caretaker of the throne after the March 12 death of her husband King Goodwill Zwelithini.
Buthelezi said the queen’s death took them by surprise, leaving the kingdom shocked and bereft.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed grief over the queen’s passing, saying: “Personally and on behalf of the government and all South Africans, I offer my sincerest condolences to the royal family and the Zulu nation.”
He added: “We extend our thoughts, prayers and hearts once more to the Royal family who, in the midst of mourning the passing of the beloved King, are now called upon to bid farewell to the regent in sadly short succession.”
